Amel Hassan Gismallah

Archaeologist, Project Director

I am Amel, co-director of the Mograt project. Originally, my family was from Shendi, but I was born in Kassala. We moved to Khartoum when I was a small child. I went to school there and later studied at the University of Khartoum, too. My father wanted me to study English, but I convinced him to join the Department of Archaeology. After graduating, I became the first woman employed in the Antiquity Service.

I was always fascinated by the antiquities of Sudan and wanted to preserve the knowledge of ancient and recent history for future generations. Since 2017, I have been with the team working on Mograt and really enjoy to interact with the people on the island and in Abu Hamed to preserve the local heritage, and share their and our knowledge of the past.
